Dermot Murphy

How long have you been part of Extreme Rhythm?
3 or 4 years

Instrument(s) you play mainly with Extreme Rhythm?
Timbale, Cowbells, Nagado-Daiko, Congas, Gong

Name your favorite music album of all time?
I don’t think anyone can have one favourite – right now I’m big into Brothers by The Black Keys

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 5 items would you take with you?
My drums, Ipod, an Ipod Charger, some skinny jeans, and my dog Kato, cos he makes me laugh!

If you could perform with any artist or band, dead or alive, who would it be, and why?
I reckon hammering out a tour with the original Guns & Roses line up could be good if you survived it!

The coolest ‘celebrity’ or famous person you’ve ever met, and why?
Serge from Kasabian. Super cool guy, and really down to earth, even gave me VIP passes to Oxegen.  Great style as well.

What’s the one thing you really need in your backstage area/dressing room before the show?
Water’s the obvious one isn’t it?  I don’t really know if I have anything in particular before a show.  Drumsticks I suppose!

How do you handle mistakes during a performance?
I try not to make them, but I guess if they happen you just move on.  Mistakes are great if you can learn from them!

How do you handle nerves before a performance?
It’s weird cos I don’t really get nervous that much.  I jus make sure to take a minute to close my eyes and get in my own headspace before the show starts.

When you’re not playing music, what other hobbies or activities do you enjoy?
I’m into skating, tattoos, travelling, and hanging out with nice people.

Do you have a quote, or motto that you try to live by?
‘Believe’

Name your most memorable moment with Extreme Rhythm (doesn’t have to be onstage)
Aside from watching Jim eating that pizza in Milan, the Coors Lite Festival would be a highlight.

If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream career?
I’ve always been into acting, so I would probably pursue that a bit more.

This is your ‘soap box’ moment.  Give us your opinion/feelings about something random – Anything!  Good or Bad!
It's a bit of a cliché, but I think it's important to have a positive mental attitude about things if you can.  Feel grateful for what you have, experience what you can, and have some fun with it.  We're not around for that long - Do something you love!!!
